Typhoon No.19 (Hagibis) Emergency Assistance - Hospital in Nagano Stranded, Doctors Assist Patient Transfers

Due to the overflooded Chikuma River, the Sanikukai Clinic in Nagano experienced power and water outages and 260 patients became stranded. Working with DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) and the SDF (Self Defense Force), the PWJ rescue team and the Airborne Rescue and Medical Team assisted transferring 118 patients to other medical facilities of which 14 patients were accompanied by the doctors from our medical team.
The patient transfer operation assisted mainly elderly who had difficulties walking by themselves. They were brought down from the 2nd and 3rd floors using a stretcher. The roads around the clinic were piled with mud and the operation was challenging. We plan to assist patient transfers on October 15.

Needs Assessments at Evacuation Centers and Distribution of Relief Items

On October 14, the team conducted needs assessments at evacuation centers and began distributing relief items.
The team inquired on the number of evacuees and items needed by the evacuees at Toyono-Nishi Elementary School, Showa-No-Mori Fitness Center, and Northern Recreation Center. Because it gets cold in the morning and at night, measures against cold are needed.
